AFLCY Girls House, Redlynch
Indij Design Role: Cultural Design Review and Procurement of Artworks and Feature Entry Wall Collaboration with AFLCY and Indij Design
Client: AFL Cape York
A driving factor for Indij Design's involvement in AFL Girls House was a shared belief that a boarding house's built environment has a unique contribution to the successful outcomes of indigenous children accessing education and career pathways after graduation. Design review considered cultural behaviours, customs and beliefs included responded to in the design to support safe and welcoming spaces.
The Methodology Behind The Artwork Selection was to source artworks from as many of AFL House student communities as possible around themes relating to women, their stories, or women’s business. It was our hope that the young women at the House feel connected to their home lands, sea and families whilst living in their ‘home away from home’. It is the intention that through the artwork, connection to country is referenced through colour, subject or gifting of works. The majority of the artworks have been created by female artists. The artworks displayed throughout have been sourced directly from Indigenous art centres, the artist or gifted by the young women’s families.
The Dilly Bag entry feature wall was collaboratively created and designed by AFLCY and Indij Design. Dilly bags have been used by aboriginal clan and nation groups across the top end of Australia. Made by women and used by women, they are a multipurpose item eg used to carry bush tucker, provide shade to babies. This wall was created collaboratively between Francoise and Kristine to showcase an object of importance to indigenous women that spans generations and time. Builder: HPS Contractors
